北海道北端の網走刑務所。殺人傷害8年の刑で服役していた橘真一は、所内で起った脱獄騒ぎには眼もくれず、雑居房の仲間たちの羨望の眼差しに送られて仮出獄となった。さしあたって行くあてもない橘は「社長が俺の保釈金を出してくれる筈だ」という病身の葉山の願いをかなえてやろうと、釧路港の志村運送店へ赴くが、そこは運送店とは名ばかりでオンボロトラックが一台あるきり、とても保釈金を出す余裕などなかった。そんなところへ、オホーツク海側の港町に荷物を運べば莫大な費用を出す、という男?安川と金田がやって来た。ちょうど思案にくれていた橘は、葉山の保釈金を得るために、その危険な仕事を買って出たのだが…。
